A Shop to Call Your Own

2010

COZY. CHARMING. CREATIVE. Thats the mood and hospitality of the Carriage House gift shop at Terrace Hill.
Tucked into a corner of the former carriage house, the gift shop enhances the Terrace Hill experience by providing an environment in which visitors can purchase quality items to remind them of their visit. Whether art, books or gifts, the merchandise relates to Iowa history or the National Historic Landmark in some unique way.
Customers are surprised by the variety of merchandise we carry, said manager Chris Cameron. Books are huge for us. We feature Iowa themes and state history, Iowa authors, plus books about teas and the social graces. We are especially pleased to offer our Entertaining at Terrace Hill cookbook, along with many other cookbooks in the shop.
Cameron and her staff of devoted volunteers welcome shoppers from throughout Iowa and across the nation. School groups, senior citizens, special-event groups, and visiting organizations receive a warm welcome in the Carriage House. Terrace Hill Society members receive a 10 percent discount on purchases.
Cameron points with pride to the Iowa artists who offer their work in the Carriage House. They include:
Amy Worthens limited-edition print
Phyllis Craigs hand-painted china
Jerry Stinns silver jewelry
Jim McDonoughs piano CDs
Carol Grahams glass jewelry
Jan Gipples silk painted scarves and
note cards
Specialty food items include melt-in-your mouth caramels from an Iowa monastery,
party-time cheese-ball mixes, tart lemon curd, sweet jams, old-fashioned stick candy, and chocolates with images of Terrace Hill.
Modestly priced grandparent gifts include childrens books and replica turn-of-the-century toys nicely non-electronic, no batteries required.
Proceeds from the sale of merchandise in the Carriage House gift shop go to support Terrace Hill educational programs, restoration projects, museum operations and other needs.
Gift shop hours coincide with tour hours and special events. However, staff members will open the shop for those who call
515-281-7662 and make arrangements for private shopping during regular business hours. That makes this A Shop to Call Your Own.
