2017 Terrace Hill Endowment for Musical Arts Piano Competiton Winners


FIRST PLACE: Roberto Gemignani      
Roberto was the 2014 MTNA Senior Winner at age 15 and Winner of IMTA Level F the same year.  Also in 2014, he was the Riley Talent Search Competition State Champion.  In 2012, he was a Winner in the Fort Dodge Symphony Young Artists Competition.  Roberto is also an accomplished composer and in the 2013 MTNA Composition Competition advanced to the West Central Division where he was awarded an Honorable Mention.  He has been awarded First Place three times and an Honorable Mention once in the Iowa Composers Forum Student Composition Contest.


SECOND PLACE: Shana Liu              
Shana Liu, 16, from Urbandale, studies piano with Dr. Ted Reuter and Dr. Mei-Hsuan Huang.  She was the 2016 senior winner, 2015 senior runner-up, and 2014 junior winner for Iowa Music Teacher's National Association (MTNA), and the 2017 and 2015 runner-up for West Central Divisional MTNA.  Shana won the Terrace Hill Piano Junior Competition in 2015 and the senior championship at the Bill Riley Talent Search in 2016. 
Shana was 2-year violinist and 2-year violist with the All State Orchestra.  She's been a member of Drake University string quartets and piano trios since 2014, played both piano and violin concertos with the Oskaloosa Symphony (2013-14) and won the DSM Youth Symphony Piano Concerto Competition (2014).  Liu accompanies Dr. Sarah Plum string studio recitals and a few of Plum's Drake University students' jury finals 2015 and 2016.  She has accompanied the Heartland Youth Choir, the Roosevelt High School Varsity Show Choirs, school musical, the chamber orchestra and the Central Iowa Symphony 2013 Christmas Concert. 
Shana is a member of Roosevelt High School National Honor Society, National Council for Youth Leadership and Community of Racial Equality Club.

THIRD PLACE: Carter Nath                
Carter is a home-schooled high school senior from Algona, Iowa.  Music, especially piano, has been a passion of his since a very young age.  He began taking lessons 13 years ago and has had the privilege of experiencing five different teachers.  For the past six years he has been under the instruction of Diane Hanselman of LuVerne, Iowa.  2017 is Nath's second appearance in the Terrace Hill Competition and he has also competed in IMTA district and state competitions.  Carter has played for many different occasions in Algona and the surrounding communities, including area businesses, banquets, and other social venues.  He is a pianist for First Lutheran Church of Algona as well as for St. Cecelia's Catholic Church of Algona.  Carter is also a private piano teacher and a certified piano technician.
